I shot one in those circumstances and it took an hour to find it. It was already bloated but usable. I field dressed it, took it straight home, rinsed it with cold water and sprinkled the inside with baking soda. It then went directly into our cooler at 32- 35 degrees.
I let it hang for a few days (3 -4 ) then skinned it, rinsed it again, and cut it. It was fine and all odor from the bloating had dissipated with the help of the baking soda.
I would say that the 1 hour was the max that I could have gotten away with, without problems. The key is to get it cooled down ASAP after field dressing in this situation.
