Your husband is wrong. Venison is the meat of of the members of the deer family. Including Whitetail, Mule, Fallow, Axis, etc.
The meat of a young sheep is know as lamb, while the meat of an old sheep is known as mutton.
An interesting one is "marsh rabbit." That is actually a name that muskrat meat was sold as in the early 20th century. And by the way it is excellent! (I used to save muskrat meat and grind it at the end of the trapping season when I used to trap.) NO muskrats are not rats.
